Melincue House

The project involves extending an existing single-storey house facing the street in Villa del Parque. The brief called for the addition of a bedroom, a bathroom, and an expansion of the home’s social areas. Above all, the clients wanted to bring more natural light into their everyday life, particularly into the communal spaces.

The proposal reconfigures the existing level to accommodate the bedrooms, each with direct access to a small patio or garden. A new upper floor is added above, gathering the living room, dining area and kitchen into one continuous space that opens directly onto a terrace, allowing these functions to spill outdoors.

The original house was built with a point-supported reinforced concrete structure —beams and columns— which was preserved entirely. Even the new staircase connecting both levels was placed within

an existing patio to avoid any intervention in the original structure.

The new upper floor is organised around an exposed concrete grid which, beyond its structural role, becomes a defining architectural element: it frames interior and exterior spaces, establishes a clear scale, and sets a constructive order. Above this grid, and aligned with the interior layout, a lightweight roof with gentle shifts in pitch introduces height and daylight, while shaping the character of the social areas below.

The house is conceived as a vertical gradient of light: the private rooms on the ground floor are immersed in a softer, more intimate light, while the upper level opens to brighter daylight and the surrounding treetops, creating contrasting atmospheres across the home.
